En vakker dag med Bjørn Eidsvåg – Case Study

En vakker dag-Intro Scene

A look into some of the work behind the title sequence “En vakker dag” (“A beautiful day”), hosted by the infamous and controversial Bjørn Eidsvåg. This show aired summer of 2011 on TV2 on prime time.

Our brief was to introduce Bjørn’s backyard on a Norwegian summer night in one fluid and continuous motion. Based on the type of show and it’s set design, we chose to go for a painterly look, to reflect the ambiance the directors were aiming for. This job had an especially tight deadline with a crew of two.

The whole spot was made in 3D, with all textures being hand-painted and with a lot of compositing wizardry.
To give you an idea of whats what, here is the 3D animatic:

3D painted look
Inspired by this SIGGRAPH paper from 2009 we wanted to incorporate the painted look beyond our painted textures. After doing some research with this technique it proved difficult to recreate in Cinema 4D as it is missing some key features to make this work properly with a fast moving camera.
We ended up rethinking this technique a little and by using 3 instances of each model with a slight offset in polygon deformation and opacity we got the look we wanted. We could have used many more instances to get a much smoother look, but because of render time and the roughness we where aiming for, we settled for 3.

Here is raw 3D render to illustrate this technique:

For the depth of field, we also played around with distorting the zDepth channel:
